Welcome to SPDNZ

New Zealand Dental Specialists caring for children’s oral health

The SPDNZ is a not-for-profit Charitable Trust formed in 2014 consisting of a group of Specialist Paediatric Dentists in New Zealand committed to actively responding to a range of issues relating to dental and oral health of tamariki in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We also continue to monitor protocols, healthcare policies, relevant guidelines and continue to engage with all stake holders in order to uphold strong advocacy for our tamariki and rangatahi as well as for our Members. The group’s membership works collaboratively with other associations, societies, government departments and institutions to advance optimal oral health of all tamariki and rangatahi in Aotearoa New Zealand. The work is accomplished through the efforts our members, who on the whole voluntarily provide their expertise.

What is a Specialist Paediatric Dentist?

In New Zealand, becoming a Specialist Paediatric Dentist requires advanced training in paediatric Dentistry from a recognised institution.

A Specialist Paediatric Dentist has initially completed an undergraduate degree of minimum 5 years to gain a Bachelors of Dental Surgery (BDS), and then completed a 3 year Postgraduate qualification, Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent). Many Specialist Paediatric Dentists in Australia and New Zealand also hold membership in special dental practice with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (MRACDS (Paed)).

The Dental Council of New Zealand (DCNZ) define the list of Specialities and Titles.  They are also responsible for setting and regulating accreditation standards and competencies for each of the dental professions.
